One of my favorite passages in the bible is Matthew 6:33. “Seek first the Kingdom of God and all these things will be added on to you.” I used to think that this passage was all about being patient and looking up to God for what’s next, but it occurred me that a better perspective of this passage would be to look ahead.
The passage explains that we need to seek the things of God. The things of God start with Him. There is a common belief that Heaven is up and that God is up. The truth is God is with us. He is Immanuel. What does it mean to seek God and His ways?
The imagery of seeking is that of a hunter focused on his prey. Not getting distracted and not worrying about anything besides the right spot and timing. In order to hunt, a hunter must look ahead. He must time his prey.
I believe leadership should be the same. For many years, I focused too much on where I was. If we are to lead ahead, we must keep our eyes on where God is leading. If you are facing a difficult circumstance in a marriage, work or school, God is calling you to lead ahead. When leading ahead our focus shifts to who God wants me to be at not who I’ve been. In any circumstance there are two things that no one can take away from us and that is our faith and our ability to get better. As follower of Jesus, husband, father, friend and pastor I could sit and ask why I am where I am, but I would be missing out on what could be. At Cross Culture Church, we will never stop asking the question as a community, “What kind of church is God calling us to be?”
See you Sunday,
Michael
